The History Department presents the Inaugural Smiley Lecture: Dr. Mike Hughes, "Embracing Democracy in Modern Germany"
Please join the History Department for the inaugural Smiley Lecture! The lecture series was established in honor of longtime history professor David Smiley, who made a strong impression on generations of history students. This biannual lecture series showcases current teacher-scholars in the Department of History and brings their intellectual contributions to a wide community of students, alumni, and local residents. This year's lecture will be delivered by Dr. Michael L. Hughes. Dr. Hughes's research and teaching focus on the history of modern Germany, and his most recent book, Embracing Democracy in Modern Germany. Political Citizenship and Participation, 1871-2000 (Bloomsbury 2021) argues that democracy – in Germany or elsewhere – cannot be a story of adversity overcome which culminates in a happy ending; it is an ongoing, open-ended process whose ultimate outcome remains uncertain.
